How
I started

| I started Athletics in 1988 just after
I had my 12th birthday. I did some gymnastics before.Well, actually, we
did more games than we did gymnastics. But the lessons in our gym stopped
and I would have to go to the other side off the city and do "real"
gymnastics if I wanted to stay with this club. Because I was much to wild
for gymnastics this wasn't a good idea. So my parents told me I could choose
another sport. I wanted to do athletics or tennis and because my parents
tought athletics was cheaper they took me to the athletics track. I liked
it very much there and i did my first competition 3 weeks later. I liked
to do competitions and when I was eighteen I'd won some medals at the junior
championships ón the highjump and the hurdles. But well, it was pretty
obvious I probably wouldn't get any further than the nationals so I decided
to take on a new challenge. I decided to go study Industrial Design Engineering
at the University in Delft.
In the last summer holidays before university we didn't really have anything
to train. there were no competitions coming up soon so our trainer suggested
the polevault, because it would get to be an official women's event in
January. I had always tought polevault looked exciting so I immediatly
tried it. I liked it very much so we did about four trainingsessions and
than went to a small competition. I jumped 2.40 there.
